Photographing Rugged Maniac

A few months back, I photographed one of the Rugged Maniac races here in Los Angeles. Usually I'm just tasked with taking photos of every racer that goes by, but this time I was a promotional shooter, which was more work, but a lot more fun. I essentially wandered the whole course looking to make great shots of people interacting with the obstacles.

It was a scorcher of a day that I overdressed for, but I thankfully brought along my half frozen water that saved me from dropping dead on the course.

It's not a journalism shoot, but that's one of the fun parts of being my own business. I get to photograph and film a lot of different things with different objectives and it keeps things from getting monotonous. There are definitely repetitive jobs and the likes, but I work with so many different people on different things that I really get to feed the part of me that loves new challenges. That being said, I bring the same staples of my photojournalistic work into everything else I do. It's at the core of my love for photography – truth, that is. That stands especially true in a day where it's common to see images toned and filtered far beyond reality. Imagery like that really bores me.

I had a lot of fun capturing honest moments of people having a lot of fun on a really hot day and I slept like a baby after a long days work (the best kind of sleep).

Here's some of my favorites from the day:

Time Out Los Angeles Bar Awards

Last month I photographed both the Time Out San Francisco and Time Out Los Angeles Bar Awards. Here's my take from the LA event, where I worked in the US Bank Tower (for the 3rd time – such a cool place to work). This work is a little different than I'm usually doing, with the first 30 minutes or so being about making product/promo shots of sponsors' alcohol and the likes before people show up. It's a tight window to try and set multiple things up that are visually appealing. That being said, it's a really fun challenge, and once I've survived that, I'm on autopilot and working on just making fun photos of the event.

And enjoying the bomb view of the entirety of Los Angeles.

And watching the poor people crawling through traffic on the 101...

Anyways, here's some of my favorite photos from the night shooting for one of my favorite clients:

Time Out San Francisco Bar Awards

I photographed the San Francisco Bar Awards for Time Out this past month after being hired as their official photographer for both the SF and LA Bar Awards. It was timed perfectly for some other personal project work going on in San Francisco for my Tattooed Gentleman project, a three year long project that continues to evolve, so it was nice to be able to double dip during my week there.
There's always a bit of pressure to these shoots; I've got a shot list I'm trying to check off. This one was extra fun, as I also had an awards wall I had to shoot against in between covering people's reactions without being able to just set up a light for the wall due to the tight space restrictions.

For whatever reason, their post never went up (edit: they did go up, but were very difficult to find LINK). The photos did make their way to a couple blogs, but never to the Time Out site. I think someone said they slipped through due to some jet lag, despite me delivering them the night of. So it goes! At least they can get some light on the blog before disappearing into the archive forever.
Here's what came out of the event:

Thanks for looking!
